The worst Poutine in America

I enjoy Poutine… Yes, it’s probably one of the worst things you can eat (fries, cheese curds, gravy), but it’s damn tasty, and quite possibly the best/worst junkfood you can eat.

With those tasty ingredients put together, I thought there would be no way to screw it up…. But then, I made the stuff pictured to the left.

I found out yesterday that A&W sells deep fried cheese curds. They also have French fries. They also have merged with KFC and have gravy. Put those all together and………..you get the worst Poutine in America :(

I’m not exactly sure what made it so horrible (other than the fact that all 3 ingredients came from a merged fast food restaurant), but it was bad. Bad, bad.
Perhaps it was the shitty fries… Perhaps it was the fact that the curds were battered and deep fried. Maybe it was because I haven’t had KFC gravy in over 10 years  and forgot how bad it was.
I’m not totally sure… All I know is that I will never mix these things together again.
Ever.

Beez Neez Sausage

Beez Neez is a hot dog/sausage cart in downtown Portland, Oregon.

They are known for their reindeer sausage (very festive for the holidays), but today I decided to try their current special, buffalo sausage.

The sausage was mixed with pork and beef (I think), but still had a slight gamey taste, which made this sausage pretty damn tasty. Nice and juicy, had grilled onions added, then put a little bit of Tillamook cheese on top. All in all, a fine sausage on a bun!

I’m totally going back for the spicy reindeer sausage soon.

Nong’s Khao Man Gai

Chicken and rice. That’s it.

So simple, but so damn good!

I’m not really a fan of Thai food, but I had heard so many good things about Nong’s Khao Man Gai that I knew I would eventually get downtown and try it. Today was that day!

First of all, Nong is the happiest person I’ve ever seen working in a cart. Super friendly, and you know she puts her heart into what she makes.

Second… The chicken is cooked up in a very simple set of spices, but tastes complex. You totally notice the ginger, but there’s other flavors in there too.
I’m not really a fan of ginger, but the chicken and the sauce that comes with it were wonderful. Next time I know to get the larger portion.

The chicken and rice also comes with a small cup of soup with some veggies in it. It goes with the rest of the meal perfectly.

This is totally rainy day food, food for when you are sick, or just plain old comfort food. Good stuff!

KOi Fusion

Inspired by the Kogi Korean BBQ food truck in the LA area, KOi Fusion is one of the best food carts in downtown Portland, Oregon.

I’ve never had Korean food before, but have always loved Mexican food. This cart fuses them together in a magically delicious way.

Their entire menu is full of delicious goodness… Tacos and burritos filled with Korean BBQ spicy pork, chicken, rib meat, and tofu.
The combination of the Korean style spices goes great with the Mexican style eats. Only one word can describe the flavor… Amazing!

Today I got to try their newest item: Jap Chae aka glass potato noodles.
These were damn tasty… Noodles, spinach, carrots, onions, shiitake mushrooms, rice, and kimchi. The noodles had a really good sesame flavor and went really well with the kimchi. I got a small order, but could totally go for the large next time.
I’m pretty sure this was actually fairly healthy too!

KOi Fusion also makes what I believe to be the best thing I have ever eaten in my life thus-far:  kimchi quesadilla with spicy pork.

I first had this about 2 months ago. At that time, I had never had kimchi before. For years I had always heard bad things about it.. Smells horrible, really spicy, fermented cabbage, etc…
Recently, a friend from work told me about how incredibly good kimchi is, so when I finally made it  to the food truck, I decided to go for the kimchi quesadilla. When I got my order, they accidentally put spicy pork in it, and that turned out to be the best mistake ever.

Kimchi does have a strong flavor, but so do pickles.
Kimchi is spicy, but not as spicy as you think.
Kimchi, when mixed with spicy Korean-style BBQ pork and jack cheese, then grilled up in a quesadilla, is quite honestly the most incredible flavor combination you will ever experience. No lie.
It’s just pure freaking goodness, there’s no other way to describe it… Then, you add their red and/or green sauce into the mix, and it makes it even better!

Here’s how I know this is the best thing I’ve ever eaten…
What’s the best thing you’ve ever ate? Think about it… After you ate that, how many days did you continue thinking about that food? 1 day? Maybe 2?

After I had my first KOi quesadilla, the flavor lingered in my mouth all day (which I know sounds kinda gross, but it was so good) and I honestly could not stop thinking about it until the next time I had one, which was about 7 days later. Serious. Every day I would try to imagine the flavor…
Now, whenever I go get one, it’s almost like I’m reliving that moment when I ate the first one.

So. Damn. Good.

Definitely go check this out. Follow them on Twitter for their latest locations and specials.
When you find them, make sure you try these things:

  • Kimchi quesadilla w/spicy pork
  • Spicy pork tacos

These are the main ones you can’t miss, but you really can’t lose with any of their menu items.

Pyro Pizza

Not a great picture, but it was a pretty good pizza!

Pyro Pizza is a food cart in Portland, Oregon, where the owner made a brick pizza oven and actually put it in the cart! I’m surprised the cart hasn’t collapsed…

I really like wood fired pizza… It’s pretty much my favorite cooking style for pizza. It really makes the crust tasty.

Pyro Pizza uses local, high-quality, fresh ingredients, and you can really taste that.

I went for the potato, sausage, bacon, rosemary pizza.
The taste was really good, but there really weren’t enough toppings. It could have used a lot more of everything. That made the value a bit low($8 and kinda small), but it is tasty, and it supports local businesses, so that doesn’t suck.

It’s worth checking out once, but ask for double or triple toppings if you can.

Korean BBQ tacos

I wish this was an original idea, but it’s not…
I first had a spicy Korean BBQ pork taco from KOi Fusion, one of the best food carts in Portland, Oregon. It was freakin’ amazing!
The idea seemed simple enough, so tonight I tried making some at home.

Corn tortilla, cabbage, grilled onions, bean sprouts, pork marinated in Koran BBQ sauce, and a squeeze of lime over the top…oh, and a little Sriracha on top too.

Results… Awesome! Totally delicious…

It’s not quite as good as the KOi taco, but it’s pretty damn close.

I think I had 5 of these for dinner tonight :)

It’s super simple to make, so give it a try!

Also.. I’ll have some pics from KOi Fusion next week: Kimchi & spicy pork quesadilla!

Patty melt @ Yellow Basket

Nothing fancy about this.. Just lots of greasy meaty flavor!

Whenever we visit the Central Point / Medford area in Oregon, I like to stop by the Yellow Basket. It’s one of those places that’s been around for years, has a greasy little kitchen, 70s decor, makes awesome shakes, good burgers, and a damn fine patty melt.

2 kinds of cheese, grilled onions, beef patty, all on grilled bread. They also took a few seconds to throw some pickles on the plate , so there’s a bonus! Nothing fancy about it at all, but it’s the second best I’ve ever had.

The BEST patty melt goes to the Little A’Le’Inn out in the middle of Nevada, but I didn’t get pics on that trip, so I guess I’ll have to go back :)
